8-minute read

At the end of New York Fashion Week we spoke to the editor-in-chief of Paper Magazine, Justin Moran, about his take on the evolving fashion landscape, where the most interesting cultural conversations are happening in New York right now, and the designers that are on his radar. Watch the video and read the full interview below.

ANDREW WASHFORD MURPHY:
Hi Justin! Can you just tell us a bit about how you got to where you are today?

JUSTIN MORAN:
I've been working at Paper since I was 23, but I've spent most of my 20s working in media in some capacity, primarily in independent publishing, music, and fashion. And building a reputation as somebody that really supports emerging talent.

AWM:
How do you express what you stand for through your work on Paper Magazine?

JM:
I think authenticity is at the core of what Paper Magazine is and has always been. And I think because of that, I'm able to maintain an authentic voice in the decisions that we make at Paper, and that's really been important to me throughout my career.

AWM:
What do you love most about being a magazine editor during Fashion Week?

“I love connecting with the community. Honestly, New York Fashion Week really feels like a homecoming, and it's the only time when so many crazy, amazing people are in one city going to shows.”

—JUSTIN MORAN

AWM:
In your opinion, who are the most exciting voices coming through from the edges right now?

JM:
Seks Fifth Avenue. They've been doing a lot of really crazy custom looks for Julia Fox. I also love Anna Bolina. She showed in Brooklyn this past week and it's really amazing to see the community of young, creative people really rally behind Anna. I think that she's doing an incredible job.

AWM:
Where do you think the fashion conversation is happening in New York when Fashion Week is over?

JM:
Honestly, in nightlife. I think that's where we see the most interesting looks and people are dressing themselves in ways that are not necessarily driven by status or designers, but just what they want to wear.

AWM:
Where do you see the industry heading in the next couple of years?

JM:
What I would love to see, and I think it will happen, is a rise of personal style and people really expressing themselves through fashion. Not necessarily wanting to associate with specific labels but using it as a space to feel free.
